Materials To Consider For Really Tall Fences

Fences come in all sorts of different heights. If you want a purely decorative fence, then you may want one that's only 2 or 3 feet tall. If you want a fence that keeps your medium-sized dog in, then a fence that's about 4 feet tall might be a good option. But what if you want a really tall fence — a 10, 12, or even 14-foot fence that provides security and privacy? Then, you'll want to think even more carefully about the materials used to make that fence. Here are three common materials used to make really tall fences, along with a look at the pros and cons of each one.

Vinyl

You'll see a lot of tall fences made from vinyl. This material works well for tall fences because it's relatively lightweight, which means even the large panels don't weigh so much that they become unwieldy. This lighter weight makes a tall vinyl fence easier to install and transport. You can easily make a solid fence from vinyl, too, which offers paramount privacy. Vinyl requires no maintenance beyond general cleaning, which is also nice when your fence towers over your yard.

The downfall of vinyl is its cost. A really tall fence made from vinyl tends to cost more than a tall fence made from any other material.

Cedar

Wood may not be your first choice of materials for a really tall fence. Wooden fences generally require maintenance, and painting or staining a 12-foot fence is a lot of work! There is one type of wood, though, that tends to be a good choice for tall fencing, and that wood is cedar. The natural oils in cedar make it repellent to insects, and they also keep the wood from rotting. You don't have to paint or stain cedar, which is good news when your fence is really tall!

A downfall of cedar fencing is that it is pretty heavy. It is, therefore, a bit difficult to install, which is generally reflected in the price.

Chain Link

A chain link fence may not be the most attractive choice, but it can be a really affordable, easy choice when you need a really tall fence and don't care as much about aesthetics. Chain link fencing costs less than cedar or vinyl, and it can be put up very quickly. While you can see through chain link fencing, you can easily add vinyl privacy slats to the fence to correct this.

If you need a big, tall fence, consider the materials above. A fencing company, such as Ephrata Agway, should be able to give you estimates, which can further help you decide on a fencing option.
