Are you thinking about renovating the exterior of your home this spring? Are you tired of your home not being the nicest looking one on the block? While renovating the interior of a home can be a difficult and time-consuming process, a house's exterior may need only minor touch ups in order to give your home a fresh and new appearance. Some things may be obvious, but others are less so. Here are a few ideas for sprucing up the look of your home:
Install new soffits and fascia: Soffits are installed under eaves, helping to protect the underside of the roof from rain being blown upwards by strong winds. Even if you don't live in an area where this is normally an issue, soffits can be an attractive addition to many houses. Fascia is installed on the angled ends of the roof to give a more uniform appearance and to help protect the rafters from the elements. Having matching soffits and fascia can help to give your home a more elegant appearance.
Get rid of your downspout: Your rain gutters are useful for a variety of reasons so you don't want to get rid of them. Unfortunately, they are usually not exactly considered attractive additions to your home. However, you can make them more decorative by replacing your downspout with aluminum rain chains. Unlike a downspout, aluminum rain chains aren't enclosed tubes. You can see and hear the water flowing down during a storm. Instead, their most common form is that of a series of funnels or cups that are chained together in a long line. But they come in many different attractive shapes and styles to fit any type of house. And because they're made of a metal that doesn't rust, you don't have to worry about replacing aluminum rain chains every few years.
Paint your trim: This is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to make your house look "fresh" and new. For many homes, you may be able to get away with just a single gallon of paint to redo your trim, compared to the many gallons it would take to redo the entire exterior. Give the exterior of your home a good wash first to remove any excess dirt and to make as much of the old paint look nice as possible. When doing just your trim, try to choose a different color than you were using before, to help give your home the appearance that the entire thing has been repainted. If your trim was blue before, try switching things up to black or green instead.
